Story of The Silk Road

Welcome to The Silk Road restaurant where you can experience a magnificent variety of cuisine from some of the lands situated on the famous ‘Silk Road’. One of history’s most important trading routes.

The Silk Road was a network of roads and sea routes stretching from China to the Mediterranean along which silk and many other goods were exchanged as well as knowledge and ideas.

The story begins in the 2nd century BC of the Han Dynasty when diplomatic missions were sent from their capital at modern day Xi’an to the tribes and kingdoms of Central Asia. The routes established led to trade between the regions but when the Romans saw the beauty of Chinese silk they soon continued all the way to the Mediterranean.

Before long, routes were opened up across Asia including land and sea routes between China and India.

By the 8th century AD The Silk Road was at its height in importance and prosperity. Trade revived briefly in the 13th century due to the Mongol conquests which increased contact between East and West, but in the 15th century Europeans discovered a faster and safer sea route to the East. The Silk Road still exists and although no longer so important for world trade many of its routes continue to be used.

We call our restaurant ‘The Silk Road’ as we feel it reflects the heritage and national diversity of the cuisines we offer. We hope you enjoy your visit and look forward to welcoming you again.
